The History of The Delkim Bite Alarm

Fishing bite alarms of today have seen a massive development over the years, one of the pioneers from the 1970's were Delkim. We follow the development of the Delkim company from the early conversions to the modern digital alarms produced today.
The Delkim company was created by two well known carp anglers and bait developers from Kent called Del Romang and Kim Donaldson, after converting friend's Heron and Optonic bite alarms they decided to form a business and brought together their names to form the name, Delkim. The first conversions were created by adding GPO speakers and flashing LEDs to the original Heron antennae type bite indicators, these were soon seen on Kent circuit carp waters like the famous Darenth complex and soon many anglers were asking Del and Kim to convert their bite alarms too.

The Optonic was a massive revolution in many angler's eyes because of the roller mechanism which increased the alarm's sensitivity without the need to re-set the indicator after each bite, it could also detect drop back bites and false bites were eliminated, soon the Optonics became vethe only bite alarms to own with carp anglers and other specimen hunters such as pike and tench anglers. The one draw back with the Optonics was that they were too quiet for night fishing and did not wake some heavy sleeping anglers. Del and Kim were quick to pick up on this and began to convert the Optonics with large GPO speakers and these conversions became the only indicator to own on most carp lakes. In 1986 due to legal issues Delkim stopped converting Optonics and Del and Kim went their own separate ways but many can still been seen on many banks today.
In 1983 Del came up with the vibration sensing idea during a dream, he ran downstairs apparently naked and pulled a piece of monofilament across a record stylus and had that Eureka moment. After many years of design, development and patent applications the first official Delkim bite alarm was produced. The design was a unique patented Piezo vibration sensor where the line runs over a 'V' shaped line guide that detects any slight movement and conducts a small electrical voltage, the digital technology transmits this into an audible sound and the flashing of an LED. The Delkim could detect the smallest line movement like no other indicator on the market and soon became the most popular amongst many anglers because of the capability of detecting small vibrations and rod tip knocks from the smallest movement from the fish which is especially useful when fishing tight to underwater snags and weed, this obviously results in more bites detected and more carp on the bank.
The Delkim range has progressed over the years and with new modern digital technology the bite alarms can incorporate remote digital sounder boxes and electronic flashing night lights which are powered by the bite indicator. The Delkim bite alarm is now an essential part of many carp angler's tackle and you will see many of them on the banks of lakes throughout the UK and abroad,without doubt these indicators have contributed to many thousands of wet nets and proud captors.
