Carp Fishing Rigs - The KD Rig

Designed by one of the best Carp anglers on the circuit, Kenny Dorsett, the KD rig is ultra effective due to the magnificent hook holds that it creates; whether it’s as the shot-on-the hair, snowman, or muzza rig.

The hook is whipped on at such an aggressive angle that the carp find it practically impossible to eject when sucked in. Due to the way that the hair protrudes out the back of the hook’s eye, you’re causing the hook point to become heavier, allowing it to drop quicker into the bottom lip unlike many rigs out there.

To ensure that the presentation is at its best, you must use it in conjunction with a slow-sinking hook bait. This can either be a purpose-made, neutrally-balanced hook bait or a pop-up anchored by placing a split shot on the hair. Both are just as good. Many anglers also place cork inside a bottom bait to create what is known as the ‘muzza’.

Through experience and results, the KD rig is best used with a curved hook pattern. As a result, go get some Kurv’s and go catch some carp!

Tying The KD Rig

Tying the KD rig is very simple; form a small overhand knot for the hair rig, Thread the selected bait onto the hair, the reason for this is to be able to select your length hair Set the hair so there is a 10cm gap between the bait and the hook

The next part is the most important part. When making the knotless knot instead of whipping up both the shank and the hair, stop the whipping after 2 turns, move the hair out of the way and continue whipping up the shank for another 5 turns. Then finish the knot as you would with a normal knotless knot.

Now tie a Link Loop or form a small overhand loop knot to the opposing end of the hooklength to allow the quick change of the rig.

See how the mechanics and the hooking angle have been radically altered just from moving the hair back along the whipping ?

The KD rig is a deadly piece of kit to have in your arsenal and when used in the right conditions can either save you a blank, or is possible putting several fish on the bank.
